Lafayette’s Ongoing Efforts to Address Affordable Housing and Community Revitalization

In recent years, Lafayette has intensified its efforts to address affordable housing shortages and revitalize under-resourced neighborhoods. These initiatives aim to provide sustainable housing solutions and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Community-Driven Revitalization in McComb-Veazey

The McComb-Veazey neighborhood, a historically Black community in Lafayette, has been at the forefront of these efforts. In partnership with Lafayette Habitat for Humanity, residents have led projects to transform their neighborhood. Key achievements include:

  • Renovating a formerly adjudicated property into the Community House, a central gathering space for events and meetings.
  • Constructing an open-air pavilion for community events.
  • Advocating for the development of a pocket park, providing a safe place for children to play.
  • Building over 40 affordable homes and acquiring additional blighted properties for redevelopment.

These initiatives have fostered a renewed sense of pride and engagement among residents, with increased participation in community events and decision-making processes.

Affordable Housing Developments

To further address housing needs, the Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) broke ground on the Ridge and Loop Commons Development in Lafayette. This project includes 192 affordable housing units designed for individuals earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The development features community spaces, a dog park, and adheres to FORTIFIED Gold and Enterprise Green Communities standards, ensuring resilience and sustainability.

Formation of the Affordable Housing Alliance

Recognizing the need for a collaborative approach, an Affordable Housing Alliance has been established in Lafayette. This coalition comprises Black developers, realtors, contractors, investors, and advocates committed to addressing housing disparities, particularly in North Lafayette. The alliance focuses on creating equitable housing opportunities and fostering economic development within the community.

Addressing Food Insecurity

In tandem with housing initiatives, Lafayette is tackling food insecurity, a significant issue affecting many residents. Community-led efforts have resulted in the establishment of community fridges and gardens in areas designated as food deserts. These projects aim to provide access to fresh produce and nutritious food options, improving overall health and well-being.

Through these multifaceted initiatives, Lafayette demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient community, addressing both housing and food security challenges through collaborative and sustainable solutions.
