Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) has been awarded $7,986,192 through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program to implement critical safety improvements along Johnston Street. This funding marks a significant step in revitalizing one of Lafayette’s key transportation and commerce corridors.
The ‘Connecting Johnston: A Safer Street for Families and Futures’ project focuses on a 1.3-mile stretch between Bertrand Drive and Churchill Drive, near Camellia Boulevard. Planned enhancements include comprehensive drainage improvements, upgraded utilities with underground telecommunications, safer intersections, improved connectivity with sidewalks and bike lanes, and native landscaping to enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal.
Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet emphasized the project’s importance, stating, ‘This investment will not only improve safety but also stimulate economic growth and enhance the quality of life for our residents.’
This initiative follows the May 2025 transfer of Johnston Street’s ownership from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to LCG, granting local control over the corridor’s future. Public input has been integral, with community meetings shaping design priorities, particularly in areas lacking adequate stormwater systems.
As Lafayette continues to grow, projects like this underscore the city’s commitment to creating safer, more accessible, and vibrant spaces for all residents.
